Building for Life

Building for Life: the national standard for well-designed homes and neighbourhoods.

In essence, Building for Life is a set of twenty questions that can be used to assess the design quality of  a housing development, either at the design stage, or once a development is completed.

Building for Life was developed by CABE, in partnership with the Home Builders Federation, Civic Trust and Design for Homes. CABE, now part of the Design Council are currently considering how to take Building for Life forward.

I have found the Building for Life questions to be a really useful framework for undertaking design review, and have also developed a workshop for housing association staff helping them ’unpack’ the Building for Life questions, so that they can incorporate consideration of these criteria into their everyday working practice.
