I really like the quotation by Franklin D Roosevelt “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”

My work with young people and schools has involved a wide range of activities, including:

  • devising and delivering hands-on curriculum-based workshops for students about architecture, planning, the local area, sustainability,
  • initiating and running the Shaping Places education programme- publication available to download at bottom of this page
  • devising and delivering CPD for teachers about the use of the local built environment as a resource for learning
  • delivering training for school governors about making the best use of the school estate, in terms of energy use, planning future development etc
  • facilitating the engagement of stakeholders at the early stages of the design process, in particular in the development of the brief for new or refurbished school buildings, including use of Design Quality Indicators

I have developed ‘Planting the SEAD’, a 24 question challenge for schools as they aim to improve not just the ‘green-ness’ their buildings and grounds, but also their relationship with the local community and the wellbeing of their students.
